Watch 'Sundul Gan' Movie

700 Pictures just released its biopic titled "Sundul Gan: The Story of Kaskus" last Thursday, June 2nd. It is directed by Naya Anindita with a number of actors including Dion Wiyoko, Albert Halim, Pamela Bowie, Baim Wong, Richard Oh and Melissa Karim. The plot is about the struggle of Ken Dean and Andrew Darwis during their creation of Kaskus in Indonesia. At that time cyber forum portals were not very common in Indonesia so they had to think how the concept could survive and be liked by people. Hard work around the clock, sacrifice and endless dramas were all part of their partnership building Kaskus, and their friendship was tested repeatedly, particularly at times of financial difficulties.

The making of Kaskus was not as easy as people would have imagined. Those who were born during that era started out with MIRC as their vehicle for chatting, only to be taken over by Yahoo Messenger came about until they heard about Kaskus. People become familiar with jargon like "pertamax" (first time), "cekidot" (check it out) and "agan" (fellow). Despite the jargon, the story flow is excellent with easy to understand dialogues. The additional animation used in several of the scenes is placed correctly, without being annoying or disturbing the screen experience. Dion Wiyoko and Albert Halim are both great and share solid chemistry as the leading actors. The settings are beautiful, filmed in both Jakarta and Seattle, accentuated by the use of some interesting angles. It is a film about friendship, creativity and commitment.
